Cross sell and bundles

Smarter cross sells and upsells that raise average order value

Cross selling means offering products that go with what a shopper is buying. Upselling means offering a better version of it. Skubl chooses both for each shopper, using purchase patterns and predicted customer value, and places them on product pages, in the cart and at checkout.

Every offer runs on the same shopper profile as Skubl’s ecommerce personalization.

The problem

Generic add-ons get ignored

Most add-on offers are the same for everyone: a fixed bundle, a random accessory, a discount that applies to every order. Shoppers skip them, and the ones who accept often would have bought anyway.

  • 01

    Irrelevant suggestions

A shopper buying a gift sees accessories for a product they don’t own.

  • 02

    Discounts that give margin away

Bundles are discounted for everyone, including loyal customers who’d pay full price.

  • 03

    Offers at the wrong moment

Upsells interrupt checkout instead of helping the shopper decide.

How Skubl solves it

How Skubl decides every cross sell and upsell

  • 01

    Bundles from real orders

Bundles are built from products your customers actually buy together, not guesses.

  • 02

    Cart and checkout offers

One relevant add-on in the cart and at checkout, sized to the order.

  • 03

    Offers by predicted value

Skubl’s predictive layer scores each shopper’s likely lifetime value, so high-value customers see premium upgrades and price-sensitive shoppers see value bundles.

  • 04

    Margin-aware by default

Set minimum margins and discount limits, and offers stay inside them.

What is cross selling, and how is it different from upselling?

Four terms worth getting straight.

Cross sell
Offering a complementary product: socks with shoes, a case with a phone.
Upsell
Offering a better or bigger version of the product: the premium model, the larger size, the multi-pack.
Bundle
A set of products sold together, often at a small saving, that makes the cross sell a single decision.
AOV
Average order value: total revenue divided by number of orders. Cross sells and upsells raise it; blanket discounts can quietly lower it.

Cross selling strategies that protect margin

  1. 01

    Use your order data

Base pairings on what customers actually buy together.

  2. 02

Match the offer to the shopper

Premium upgrades for high-value customers, value bundles for price-sensitive ones.

  3. 03

    Offer one thing

A single relevant add-on beats a carousel of ten.

  4. 04

    Measure net of discount

Track the margin you gained, not just the extra items sold. See ecommerce A/B testing.

Ecommerce upselling examples

Illustrative scenarios, not customer results.

  • Complete the look

A linen shirt in the cart triggers a one-click offer for the pants most often bought with it.

  • Size remembered, upgrade offered

A returning customer sees the premium knit in their usual size.

  • Post-purchase add-on

The order confirmation page offers a small, relevant accessory to add before shipping.

Cross selling FAQ

What is cross selling?

Cross selling is offering a shopper products that complement what they’re already buying, such as a case with a phone or socks with shoes. Done well, it helps the shopper get everything they need in one order.

What are upsells?

Upsells are offers for a better, bigger or more premium version of the product a shopper is considering, such as a larger size, an upgraded model or a multi-pack.

What is AOV?

AOV, or average order value, is your total revenue divided by the number of orders over the same period. If you made $50,000 from 1,000 orders, your AOV is $50.

How do you increase AOV?

Offer relevant cross sells and upsells, bundle products that are bought together, set free-shipping thresholds just above your current AOV, and personalize offers so each shopper sees the add-on they’re most likely to want. Measure the result net of discounts so you know the extra revenue is profitable.
